In FY17 the Five Wings Arts Council awarded over $410,000 to support arts activities that directly impacted the lives of over 163,000 Minnesotans living in Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena Counties. 107 grants were awarded to 39 organizations and 11 schools, supporting projects as diverse as the youth arts programs for the kids at TheShop in Brainerd to the creation of an original play based on stories of people who have been impacted by depression and suicide. 15 artists received grant funds to advance their artistry and arts career, ranging from purchasing professional editing services to prepare a novel for publication to creating a documentary on a regional cultural treasure.
Thanks to the citizens of Minnesota, funding to support the arts activities offered by non-profit arts organizations, schools and communities, comes from the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature, as well as the General Fund of the State of MN. Funding to support individual artists is provided through the McKnight Foundation. The Five Wings Arts Council board of directors serves as the review panel for all eligible applications, and is composed of representatives of each county in the Five Wings region.
